Due to the efforts of the Canadian Polish Congress MB District, a commemoration of Black Ribbon Day took place on 22 August 2016 at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Representatives of the Ukrainian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak and Latvian communities came together to remember the millions killed by the Soviet and Nazi regimes.
Present were MP Kevin Lamoureux, Provincial Minister Ron Schuler, MLAs Nic Curry, Cindy Lamoureux, Brad Michalski, Andrew Smith and Len Isleifson. UCC-MPC President Oksana Bondarchuk spoke on behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian community. UCC-MPC Board members Roman Yereniuk, Ruslan Nadia Zeleniuk, Myroslava Pidhirnyj and Joan Lewandosky were present. Fr. Taras Udod represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. Special thanks to Grazyna Galezowski for providing leadership in coordinating and organizing this year’s commemoration.
